In the period between the wars the mischievous locals used to tell a tale to the Italians working in the area about a giant subterranean monster with red eyes. They even went so far as to impress its footprints in the mud. They say that after that they could no longer persuade the Italians to go into the cave – even though it was merely a modern version of the story of the Postojna dragon that they had fallen for.
